Located in the Elmwood Section of West Hartford, CT (WeHa, as the locals call it), lies a small restaurant named HB Seafood. I’ll be the first to admit they are serving some great seafood dishes north of the Long Island Sound! Opened in 2014 by Matt and Juntimar Malahan, HB Seafood is a mix of American Seafood with an Asian influence, which can be found in many of the dishes they serve. The food is fresh and made-to-order. You can order it to go, but I’ve learned that seafood dishes taste best when they are eaten fresh. My partner and I ordered several dishes, along with an appetizer. The food came to our table fairly quickly and was absolutely delicious!
The first dish out was the Thai Calamari ($8.95). The trick to calamari is time. If it is cooked too long, you will be chewing on a rubber band. This calamari came out perfectly. The spicy lime and garlic sauce paired perfectly with the spicy notes of the calamari. The texture was perfect and it tasted great. Note: Ask for the Sambal Sauce.
Next came the tacos. Now some places won’t let you mix and match different entrees, but we wanted to try different versions without having to pay for two orders. The cashier was kind to let us order a Salmon Taco ($9.95) and a Blackened Fish (Cod) Taco. ($8.95)
With the entrees, you have a choice of two sides to go with your meal. We chose the salad and the coleslaw. The tacos are dressed with, chipotle aioli, a creamy avocado sauce, pico de gallo, red onion and cilantro. The tacos were good with the perfect amount of seasoning on them. The slight spiciness of the blackened taco was tamed by the coolness of the avocado cream.
Lastly, were the Shrimp Quesadillas ($11.95). They too came with 2 sides, in which we just grabbed some chips to snack on later. The quesadillas also come with chipotle aioli, avocado cream and pico de gallo, along with a cilantro garnish. They didn’t skimp on the shrimp! There was a piece of shrimp and cheese waiting for me with each bite. It was a pretty large portion, and by this time we were pretty full so we opted to take it home with us.
Overall, HB Seafood is worth the trip, especially if you don’t feel like navigating the coast of CT and its endless construction.
